The subcompact hatchback has been the small car in the Asian and European markets for years, and it’s finally catching on stateside. The 2017 Honda Fit is the latest in a long line of class leaders, and we think it’s the best subcompact hatchback available to our Milwaukee drivers.
What makes it so special? We compared it to three of its top competitors to best show you.
What We Love About the Fit
Over the years, the Fit has asserted itself as the fun-to-drive yet easy-to-own small car, affordable yet well-appointed, fuel-efficient yet energetic. Priced at only $15,990 (MSRP) for LX 6MT models,* the Fit leaves its competition looking positively simple in areas drivers care most about.
- Standard Features: Honda has been redefining how drivers look at entry-level features, and the Fit’s standard multi-angle rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio, and rear 60/40-split folding Magic Seat give it an edge over the average competitor. The 2016 Kia Rio LX 5-door and 2016 Toyota Yaris L 5-door, for instance, require upgrades for comparable features.
- Fuel Economy: The Fit has left its competitors in the rearview when it comes to fuel economy, with 2017 Fit LX CVT models rated at an EPA-estimated 40 highway mpg and 33 city mpg.** You can expect just 37 highway mpg from the Kia Rio, 35 highway mpg from the 2017 Chevy Sonic LT, or 36 highway mpg from the 2016 Toyota Yaris.
- Interior Space: A hatchback should be versatile, and the Fit’s Magic Seat lets it expand the cargo area to as much as 52.7 cubic feet (and Honda’s hatchback has up to 95.7 cubic feet of passenger space). The Yaris, Rio, Sonic, and 2016 Nissan Versa Note S Plus all offer less in the way of passenger and cargo volume.
We’ve just looked at the base LX model; don’t forget that the 2017 Honda Fit has EX and EX-L models available as well.
