The Insight’s hybrid system is comprised of an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Motor powered by a lithium ion battery along with a gas-powered 1.5L in-line 4-cylinder engine. In most driving instances, the Insight operates on its electric power, with the gasoline engine doubling as a generator to recharge the battery for better efficiency and longer electric mile ranges. Considered on its own, the engine produces 107 horsepower while the electric motor produces 129 horsepower. Altogether, the Insight has a total system horsepower of 151.
One of the chief reasons for choosing a hybrid vehicle is its impressive fuel economy. Not only is it a better choice for the environment, but it also saves time and money with less frequent visits to the gas station. The hybrid system works with an electric continuously variable transmission, or e-CVT, that delivers the power generated under the hood to the front wheels. For the entry-level LX and mid-level EX trim, the EPA estimated fuel economy is 55 city / 49 highway / 52 combined mpg.* Choose the top-of-the-line Touring model and you’ll get 51 city / 45 highway / 48 combined mpg.*
For an engaging driving experience, the Insight features a 3-mode driving system. The Econ mode provides comfort and fuel efficiency and is the perfect mode for everyday driving or when you want a quiet cabin that’s insulated from road and engine noise. The Sport mode allows drivers the thrills of owning a sports sedan while reaping the benefits of a hybrid. It transforms the feel at the pedals and accentuates engine growls when you accelerate. Finally, the EV mode allows the Insight to operate solely on electrical power.
The Insight includes an extensive list of active safety features that enhance its performance, even in inclement weather or less-than-ideal road conditions. It supports the Insight to take on any road.
As drivers continue to explore the Insight there are even more performance features to note, including the sophisticated suspension system that creates a smooth ride and absorbs road bumps with class. And an Eco Assist System helps drivers adjust their inputs to drive more efficiently and get the most out of their hybrid.
